Mexico Deploys 10,000 Troops to Border Amid Tariff Threats and Fentanyl crisis
CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico — A convoy of Mexican National Guard and Army trucks rolled along teh border separating Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday. This deployment is part of a broader effort by Mexico to send 10,000 troops to its northern frontier, a response to tariff threats issued by President Donald Trump.
Masked and armed National Guard members meticulously searched the brush along the border barrier on the outskirts of Ciudad Juárez. They discovered and confiscated makeshift ladders and ropes hidden in the trenches, loading them onto trucks. Similar patrols were observed in other border areas near Tijuana.
this deployment follows a turbulent week along the border. Trump announced a delay in imposing crippling tariffs on mexico for at least a month. In exchange, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised to send the country’s National Guard to reinforce the border and crack down on fentanyl smuggling.
Trump has declared a state of emergency on the border despite significant drops in migration levels and fentanyl overdoses over the past year. The U.S. has agreed to intensify efforts to stop American guns from being trafficked into Mexico, which fuels cartel violence. This violence has spread to other parts of the country as criminal groups vie for control of the lucrative migrant smuggling industry.
On Tuesday, the first wave of these forces arrived in border cities, disembarking from goverment planes. Guard members in Wednesday’s patrols confirmed their participation in the new deployment.
“There will be permanent surveillance on the border,” stated José Luis Santos iza, one of the National guard leaders overseeing the deployment in the city. “This operation is primarily aimed at preventing drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.”
At least 1,650 troops were expected to be sent to ciudad Juárez, making it one of the largest recipients of border reinforcements in the country, second only to Tijuana, where 1,949 troops are slated to be deployed.
During U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s trip through Latin America, where migration was a top agenda item, the top american diplomat thanked the Mexican government for the deployment, according to a statement by the Mexican government.
Observers view Sheinbaum’s negotiation as a shrewd political maneuver. Many had previously doubted her ability to navigate Trump’s presidency as effectively as her predecessor and ally, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
