An Immersive Journey Through Asian Art: The “guimet +” Exhibition in Clermont-Ferrand
Since December 12, the Roger-Quilliot Art Museum (Marq) in Clermont-ferrand has become a gateway to Asia, thanks to the launch of the “Guimet +” operation. This exceptional decentralized exhibition brings thirty masterpieces from the Guimet Museum in Paris to the heart of Auvergne, offering visitors a unique prospect to explore the rich cultural heritage of Asia.
China Takes Center Stage
Untill November 2, 2025, China is the focal point of this exhibition. Among the treasures on display are a bronze statue of Laozi from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), an 18th-century imperial vase, and an archaic bronze ritual object dating back to the 13th century BC. These artifacts, alongside others like a Tang dynasty courtyard and a Qianlong-era vase, provide a glimpse into China’s artistic and historical grandeur.
Christine Bouilloc, Director of Marq, describes the exhibition as “an invitation to travel and knowledge of Asian cultures which, even though geographically distant, continue to resonate wiht our civilization and amaze us.”
Themes and Scenography
The exhibition is structured around four themes: the sacred, beauty, prestige, and transgression. To enhance the visitor experience, an innovative scenography has been designed, including an immersive projection that transports guests into the Maison du Lettré Chinois. This creative approach allows visitors to step into the heart of a Chinese scholar’s workshop, blending education with entertainment.
Additionally, the textile collections of marq complement the Guimet’s masterpieces. Rarely seen items, such as two Mandarin dresses and a pair of 19th-century shoes for bandaged feet, are now on display, offering a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
A Four-year Asian odyssey
The “Guimet +” operation is part of a four-year program that will explore various Asian cultures. After China, the spotlight will shift to Japan in 2026, followed by the Himalayan world in 2027, and concluding with India in 2028.This ambitious initiative underscores the Marq’s commitment to bringing global art to regional audiences.Key Highlights of the Exhibition
