Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Responds to Trump’s Tariffs with Dialog and Defiance
In a bold response to Donald Trump’s executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all Mexican products entering the United States, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has extended an olive branch while firmly defending her nation’s sovereignty. In a video message shared on her social media, Sheinbaum emphasized the need for dialogue without “confrontation” or “subordination,” stating, “Sovereignty is not negotiable.”
The imposition of tariffs, signed by Trump on Saturday, has sparked a diplomatic standoff between the two nations. Sheinbaum revealed that her administration had been in constant dialogue with the U.S. State Department in recent weeks to address migration and other issues. However, she criticized the Trump administration’s claims of collusion between the Mexican government and drug trafficking as “slander,” calling it “terribly irresponsible” for the White House to issue such accusations.
Sheinbaum also turned the spotlight on the United States, arguing that the real issue lies within its borders.“If they want to act, they should not fix their sight in Mexico, but in their own country, where they have not done anything to stop the illegal sale of this and other drugs,” she said. Highlighting her government’s efforts, Sheinbaum noted that 10,000 individuals linked to organized crime had been arrested and 40 tons of drugs—including 20 million doses of fentanyl—had been seized in the first four months of her presidency.
At a rally in Texcoco, Sheinbaum warned that the tariffs would ultimately harm U.S. consumers more than Mexico. “If this [los aranceles] remains, the companies that are here can value whether they stay or leave,” she said. Despite acknowledging potential medium-term economic impacts,Sheinbaum remained confident, declaring,“I am not missing because I have a town behind me,” to thunderous applause from the crowd.
Sheinbaum’s response blends diplomacy with defiance, offering a negotiating table while delivering a nationalist message that resonates with her base. Her administration’s next move will be revealed on Monday, February 3, when she unveils her tariff measures plan in response to Trump’s decree.
