KAI Commuter Introduces 12 New Train Cars to Enhance Jabodetabek Commuter Line
In a notable move to improve urban transportation, KAI Commuter has successfully imported a new trainset consisting of 12 state-of-the-art train cars from CCRC Qingdao Sifang. This addition is expected to boost capacity and enhance the commuting experience for residents of the Greater Jakarta area, known as Jabodetabek.
Joni Martinus, VP Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter, confirmed that the new trains underwent rigorous factory acceptance testing before being shipped to Indonesia. “The arrival of these new trains is in accordance with the planned schedule, so it is expected to help the mobilization of commuter line users more optimal,” he stated in a written release on January 31, 2025.Upon arrival, the trains will undergo dynamic testing to ensure all systems function correctly before they begin carrying passengers. This step is mandated by Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 49 of 2023, which requires all commuter trains to be certified by the Directorate General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation.
“We conduct this process to ensure that all safety and operational standards have been met. These new commuter trains are expected to meet the high demand for public transportation,” Joni explained.
The fleet expansion comes at a crucial time, as the number of commuter line passengers continues to grow. During the 2024/2025 Christmas and New Year holiday period, over 1,275,209 people used the service, marking an increase from the previous year.”This shows that the commuter line is increasingly becoming the primary choice for the public. Thus, we continue to work hard to ensure that the procurement and dynamic testing of new trains can proceed smoothly without obstacles,” Joni added.
Beyond transportation, Joni emphasized the commuter line’s role in supporting local economies. ”We are committed to continuously improving services to ensure that the commuter line remains a comfortable, safe, and affordable mode of transportation for all,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the government and all stakeholders who supported the procurement process. “We hope that the arrival of these new trains can further enhance the quality of urban transportation in Jabodetabek,” he concluded.
