Tragedy Strikes Skating community as Plane Crashes into Potomac River
NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS — The skating world is mourning the loss of 14 members of its tight-knit community after an American Airlines flight collided with an army helicopter and crashed into the icy waters of the Potomac River on Wednesday night. among the victims were two teenage skaters, their mothers, and two former world champions who trained at the historic Boston Skating Club.
The tragic incident occurred as the flight, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was making a routine landing near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Three soldiers aboard the Blackhawk helicopter also perished in the collision.
A Devastating Loss for the skating World
The victims were returning from a National Development camp for young skating talents following the United States Championship in Wichita,Kansas. Doug Zeghibe, executive director of the Boston skating Club, confirmed the identities of the deceased, including teenage skaters Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, and their mothers.
Also on board were Russian-born coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, the 1994 world champion pairs skaters. The Kremlin confirmed their presence on the flight. Their son, Maxim naumov, a U.S. youth champion, had flown home earlier and was not on the plane.
“Skating is a very united and compact community,” Zeghibe said during a press conference. “These children and their parents are here at our facilities in Norwood, six, sometimes seven days a week.It is a narrow and solid link. This will have long-range impacts for our skating community.”
A Community in Mourning
The Boston Skating Club, one of the most prestigious in the world, has produced Olympic and world champions such as Dick Button, Tenley Albright, Nancy Kerrigan, and Paul Wylie. The club is set to host the World Championships this spring.
On Thursday, flags at the club’s newly built rink were flown at half-mast. Visitors included Albright and Kerrigan, who paid their respects alongside young skaters practicing their routines in silence.
“The skaters are resilient and want to skate,” Zeghibe said. “I also believe that thay come to the club and will come to the club as an opportunity to meet and cry together.”
A table once filled with messages of encouragement for skaters in Wichita was replaced by framed photos of Lane and Han in action, accompanied by six white roses in simple vases.
A History of Tragedy
This is not the first time the skating community has faced such a devastating loss. In 1961, the U.S.Figure Skating Team was involved in a plane crash in Belgium, which claimed the lives of 18 team members.
The cause of Wednesday’s collision remains under inquiry, though officials noted that flight conditions were clear at the time.
A Statement from the Federation
The United States Figure Skating Federation released a statement expressing its grief: “We are disconsolate to know that skaters, along with their families, friends, and coaches, were on board. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy. Artistic skating is more than a sport; it is a very united family, and we are together.”

The artistic skating world is mourning the devastating loss of several beloved skaters in a tragic accident that has left the community heartbroken. Among those affected is world champion Ilia Malinin, who recently secured his third consecutive national title in Wichita. “I am disconsolate by the tragic loss of my fellow skaters in this devastating accident,” Malinin shared.“the artistic skating community is a family, and this loss is indescribable.”
One of the victims, Spencer Lane, was a rising star in the skating world. A sectional champion, Lane had garnered a important following on social media, especially on TikTok, where he shared his journey with thousands of fans. Just days before the accident, Lane posted a video of himself training, showcasing his dedication to the sport. In an Instagram post, he expressed his excitement about qualifying for the National Development Camp: “I am so happy to have qualified for the National development Camp. It has been my goal almost since I realized that it was one thing. I learned a lot of new information that I can apply to my daily life and met many remarkable people.”
Lane’s father, Douglas Lane, described his son as someone who brought joy to everyone he met. “In his local club in Boston, he was simply loved by all, from adults who directed the club to smaller skaters to people who compete for a place at the Olympic Games,” he told WPRI in Providence, Rhode Island. “They simply worshiped him.”
The accident has also deeply impacted the boston Skating Club, a historic institution that has served as a training ground for world-class skaters as 1912. The club’s president, Zeghibe, reflected on the tragedy, drawing parallels to a 1961 plane crash that claimed the lives of the entire U.S. delegation en route to the World Championships in Prague. “Almost half of all those who were aboard that plane were from this club,” Zeghibe said. “It had long-range implications for the skating club and for sports in this country, because when you lose coaches like that, you also lose the future of sport.”
Despite the somber mood, the club is preparing to host the World Championships at the TD Garden in Boston from March 25 to 30. Zeghibe emphasized that the event will be a celebration of the sport and its resilience.“The plans are for a super, incredible event,” he said.
Simultaneously occurring, the European Championships are proceeding as scheduled in Tallinn, Estonia, offering a glimmer of normalcy for the skating community.
