Colombian Coffee Prices Soar to⁢ Historic Highs Amid⁢ global Market Shifts ‍

The ‍price of Colombian coffee has reached unprecedented ‌levels, with ⁣the pound ⁣trading at a record 369.78 cents on⁣ the international market, according to the⁢ International Coffee Organization (ICO). This marks a 1.95% increase from the 362.71 cents recorded just‍ days earlier on⁤ January 27, 2025.

The surge in Colombian coffee‌ prices is largely attributed ⁤to a combination of global and domestic factors. A weak coffee harvest in Brazil, the world’s largest ⁢coffee ‌producer, due to ⁣droughts and extreme frosts, has significantly impacted supply. Additionally, rising demand ‌from China and‍ ongoing global tensions have further driven prices ‌upward.

“The value of the ‌Colombian grain exceeded the barrier of 300 cents in mid-November ⁤and has remained close to 370 cents since then,” the report highlights. These figures surpass⁤ previous highs from⁣ the 1950s‍ and ⁢1970s, when Colombian⁢ coffee ‌traded ‍at 332 cents per pound.

Internal Market Reflects Record‌ Highs

The record-breaking‍ prices in international markets are mirrored domestically. According to the National Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC), the value of ‌a 125-kilo load of coffee reached an ⁣all-time ⁣high of 2,881,000 pesos, benefiting⁤ approximately 550,000 coffee-growing ⁢families.

Colombia’s coffee production ⁢has also seen remarkable growth, closing 2024 with nearly 14 million 60-kilogram bags—a 23.9% increase from the previous year. December⁤ alone saw a ⁣47% surge in production compared to the ⁢same month in 2023. ‌

Exports on the‍ Rise ⁢

Coffee exports have similarly ‌flourished. In december 2024, colombia sold ‍20% more coffee bags globally than in December 2023. ‍For the full year, exports rose from 10.6 million to 12.3 million bags, marking a 16% increase.⁣

Weather and Market⁤ Dynamics

Weather conditions have played a pivotal role in shaping the market. While most regions in Colombia have enjoyed sunny and favorable conditions, Nariño has faced‍ a drought. ‍meanwhile, the U.S. dollar has strengthened below 4,300 pesos, ⁢a ⁣trend linked to President Trump’s assumption of office‌ and the resulting market uncertainty.

Global Coffee Market Trends

The global coffee market is also experiencing⁣ shifts. Arabica coffee reached new intraday highs, driven by a lack of current sales in Brazil and rising Brazilian coffee differentials. In Indonesia, above-normal rainfall has favored the fruit stage of the ‌2025/26 robusta coffee harvest, though the market remains unchanged due to ⁤festivities in Vietnam.
