Russian Delegation Visits Damascus, Assures Moscow’s Interests “will not Suffer”
In a meaningful diplomatic move, a high-level Russian delegation arrived in Damascus on Tuesday, marking the frist official visit since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December. The delegation, led by Vice-Minister of Foreign affairs Mikhail Bogdanov, met with the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Charaa, adn Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Chibani, signaling Moscow’s intent to maintain its strategic foothold in the region.
The three-hour meeting, described as productive by Bogdanov, focused on safeguarding Russia’s interests, particularly its two critical military bases in Syria. “The meeting has all passed well,” Bogdanov stated, emphasizing Russia’s readiness to “contribute to the stabilization of the situation.” He expressed hope that “Russian interests will not suffer” and that the status of the bases “will not change,” though he acknowledged that “this question will require additional negotiations.”
The new Syrian governance, in a press release, highlighted the discussions’ focus on “key questions, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.” The statement also underscored russia’s support for ongoing changes in Syria, noting its role in “the restoration of confidence with the Syrian people through concrete measures such as repairs, reconstruction, and recovery.”
Though, the talks also addressed the establishment of “judicial transition mechanisms” aimed at delivering “justice to the victims of the brutal war waged by the Assad regime.” the administration warned that “the restoration of relations must take into account the errors of the past,respect the will of the Syrian people,and serve their interests.”
