Historic Cargo Arrival at Kertajati Airport Marks New Chapter for West Java
On the morning of January 28, 2025, a meaningful milestone was achieved at the Kertajati Airport in West Java. A Maskargo plane owned by Malaysia Airlines touched down, carrying 900 sheep from Australia. This marked the first-ever cargo arrival at the airport, signaling a new era for its operations.
The shipment included a diverse mix of breeds: 60 male and 475 female Dorper Black Head sheep, 80 male and 140 female Suffolk sheep, and 45 male and 100 female Texel sheep. These animals are set to undergo quarantine in Cilacap, Central Java, before being distributed.
Acting Governor of West Java, Bey Machmudin, was present to witness the historic landing. ”This is the first cargo arrival at Kertajati Airport, namely the shipment of 900 sheep from Australia,” he stated. The event is part of broader efforts to revitalize the airport, which has faced challenges in recent years.
Bey emphasized the airport’s potential as a hub for both passenger and cargo activities. “In addition to serving passengers, the airport in Majalengka Regency will also be enlivened by cargo activities, both domestic and international ones. This is part of our efforts to revive Kertajati [Airport],” he explained.
One of the key advantages of Kertajati airport is its cost efficiency.Bey noted that non-transportation costs for cargo services are significantly lower compared to other airports, such as Soekarno-Hatta. “I asked the importer earlier, and they said the non-transportation costs are cheaper here than Soekarno-Hatta Airport. They will opt for Kertajati Airport going forward,” he said.
The airport’s advanced navigation system also sets it apart. “The pilot said earlier that the runway is good and safe, especially with the complex navigation system. it’s safer here since it can handle foggy weather,” bey added, highlighting the facility’s reliability even in challenging conditions.
