Teh Dutch armed forces are ‍set to undergo a significant‍ expansion, with plans to grow to at least ⁣100,000 personnel, according to State Secretary Gijs Tuinman of Defense. In a recent interview on the EO television program Dit is Tijs, Tuinman stated, “I now have about‍ 74,000 people, a medium-sized city. That is quiet a bit, but I have ‌to grow quickly to 100,000 people.” This marks the first time a specific target number has been publicly announced, though ⁣a spokesperson clarified that the precise figure will be steadfast later this summer when all branches of the armed forces present their plans.

Despite the ambitious growth target, Tuinman emphasized‌ that a ‍reintroduction of conscription is not necesary. ‍This comes amid concerns raised by NATO in confidential documents, which highlighted the Dutch army’s inadequacies on multiple fronts. “Although⁤ billions of euros more are going to defense ⁢and we meet the 2 percent standard, our country is not complying with other NATO agreements,” a recent report noted.

The expansion is driven by the increasing threat from Russia and other global tensions. The Dutch defense budget has already risen to around 22 billion ‍euros this year,‍ with further increases expected in the coming years. However, recruiting new personnel⁤ remains ⁢a significant challenge. Thousands of vacancies remain ⁣open, prompting the ministry to⁣ invest an additional ⁢quarter of a billion euros in personnel ⁣recruitment and retention over the next few years.

To address this, initiatives like the ⁣Army Orientation Days are being held to⁣ attract young people ⁢to careers in defense. These efforts aim⁤ to fill the growing demand for skilled personnel as the armed forces prepare ⁤to meet modern security challenges.
