Sharjah African Literature Festival Celebrates the Richness of African culture and Heritage
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the inaugural edition of the Sharjah African Literature Festival (SFAL) kicked off wiht grandeur at the University City Hall in Sharjah.The festival,themed “The Story of Africa,” is a landmark event aimed at celebrating the continent’s rich literary and cultural heritage.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, inaugurated the festival, emphasizing its role in fostering cultural dialogue. “The opening of the first session of the Sharjah African Literature Festival represents a unique step towards enhancing the bridges of human dialogue,” she said. “In an era in which the world has become more interconnected, the importance of investing this rapprochement is highlighted to identify cultures, customs, and arts for different peoples.”
The festival’s opening ceremony was marked by the honoring of nigerian novelist Wole Soyinka, the first African writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. A visual presentation highlighted Soyinka’s contributions to literature, especially his exploration of freedom, social justice, and African myths. Sheikha Bodour presented him with the Sharjah Literary Recognition Award, recognizing his distinguished career and his impact on global literature.
A Platform for Cultural Exchange
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Amiri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, underscored the festival’s significance in promoting African literature. “Through this festival,we translate the directives of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi,who has always emphasized the importance of literature and publishing in Africa,” he said. “Africa holds a vital place in the history and present of world literature, serving as a source of inspiration for individuals and societies alike.”
The festival’s program is a vibrant mix of literary discussions,artistic performances,and interactive workshops. Renowned African authors such as Chika Unigwe (Nigeria),Mara Menzies (Kenya),and Jennifer Makumbi (Zimbabwe) are participating,alongside the American-Nigerian writer Nnedi Okorafor. These literary giants are set to engage in eight discussion panels and three inspiring seminars,offering attendees a deep dive into African storytelling and its global influence.
Celebrating African Heritage
The festival also celebrates Africa’s cultural diversity through artistic performances and workshops. the opening ceremony featured a mesmerizing show by the Orchestra Forum, blending Arab heritage music with african melodies. Traditional costumes and designs reflecting the continent’s rich cultural tapestry added vibrancy to the event.
For younger attendees, the festival offers 12 interactive workshops, including pottery, jewelry design, and tale drawing, designed to introduce children to African heritage arts. Additionally, four cooking sessions led by African chefs such as Wana Udobang and Ozoz Sokoh will showcase the continent’s culinary traditions.
A Bridge Between Cultures
Nigerian writer Lola Shoneyin praised the festival’s role in strengthening ties between the Arab world and africa. “We highly appreciate the role of His Highness sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al qasimi, who embody true friendship with Africa,” she said. “These roots today gather great writers who have left their mark on world literature, enhancing the interdependence between two regions rich in ancient heritage.”
the festival’s diverse program, which includes 29 writers from the UAE and africa, such as Tanzanian author Abdulrazak Gurnah, reflects sharjah’s commitment to becoming a global hub for culture and literature.
