OpenAI Unveils ‘Operator’: the AI Agent That Can Surf the Web and Order for You
ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has introduced a groundbreaking new AI feature called Operator, designed to autonomously navigate the web and perform tasks like ordering products or booking reservations. However, users can’t fully sit back just yet—there are still limitations to what this advanced agent can do.
Operator leverages the new Computer-Using Agent-model, which combines GPT-4o’s ability to interpret on-screen content with advanced reasoning. This allows it to understand buttons, menus, and text boxes on websites. By mimicking mouse and keyboard inputs, Operator can navigate sites independently.
To make this feature functional, OpenAI has partnered with companies like Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Priceline, and StubHub. As a notable example, users can provide Operator with a written shopping list, and the AI will handle the online ordering process. It can also book restaurant reservations or even manage multiple tasks simultaneously, accepting new commands before completing the previous ones.
When Operator Needs Help
Despite its advanced capabilities, Operator isn’t entirely self-sufficient. If it encounters a problem, it attempts to correct itself using its reasoning abilities. However, if it fails, it will notify the user for assistance. Additionally, Operator cannot handle sensitive details like login credentials or payment details—users must input these manually. CAPTCHAs,designed to verify human users, also require manual intervention.
Before executing critical actions, such as sending an email or placing an order, Operator seeks user confirmation. Users can also halt the AI mid-task if needed.
What Operator Can’t Do
As a precaution, Operator is restricted from performing certain tasks, such as banking or job applications. It also blocks malicious requests to prevent misuse. Users concerned about data privacy can opt out of allowing OpenAI to use their data for training purposes. They can also log out of all sites accessed by Operator or delete their history.
Availability and Future Plans
Currently, Operator is available as a research preview exclusively for ChatGPT Pro users in the United States, who pay $200 a month. OpenAI plans to expand access to Plus,Team, and Enterprise subscribers in the future. If the company is satisfied with its performance, Operator will be integrated into ChatGPT.
OpenAI acknowledges that Operator is not yet perfect and may make mistakes. Though, the company is optimistic about its continuous improvement.
