Instagram has officially entered the video editing arena with the launch of its new app,Edits. announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri via a post on Instagram, the app is positioned as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut, which recently went offline in the U.S. Mosseri described Edits as “more than a video editing app, it’s a full suite of creative tools,” promising a robust set of features designed to empower creators. The app includes a dedicated tab for inspiration,a space to track early ideas, and a high-quality camera for capturing photos and videos. Users can also access advanced editing tools, share drafts with friends and other creators, and gain powerful insights into their video performance when shared on Instagram. Mosseri emphasized the app’s versatility, stating, “Think a place to track all your ideas rather of templates. Think AI video editing tools on a per clip or per video basis. Think new insights on why your videos are succeeding or struggling.”
Despite comparisons to CapCut, Mosseri clarified that Edits is not a clone. In a response on Threads, he highlighted the app’s broader range of creative tools and its focus on a smaller, more niche audience. “ItS been months and I think it’ll end up pretty different than CapCut,” he wrote. “Edits will have a much broader range of creative tools and probably a smaller addressable audience.”
The launch of Edits comes at a pivotal moment for ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok and CapCut. Both apps temporarily went offline in the U.S. on January 19,2025,in compliance with a federal law requiring ByteDance to sever ties with its Chinese ownership or face a ban. Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order granting TikTok a 90-day grace period to comply with the law.Trump also proposed a joint venture for TikTok in the U.S., with a domestic company taking 50% ownership in the new entity.
