The father of the victim in the topscroll”>Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer wiht the Kolkata Police, was convicted under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which governs rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, which deal with punishments for death and murder. The case dates back to August 9 last year, when the semi-naked body of a 31-year-old on-duty doctor was discovered on the third floor of the seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy was arrested the following day.
When Anirban Das,the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court,delivered the verdict,the victim’s father expressed his gratitude,telling the judge that he had “honoured the faith” he had in him. The sentencing is scheduled for Monday.
During the hearing, roy maintained his innocence, claiming he was being “framed.” “I haven’t done this.Why are those who did it being allowed to go?,” the 33-year-old said. The judge assured him that he would be given an chance to speak during the sentencing hearing.Sanjay Roy, currently held at Kolkata’s Presidency Jail, has consistently denied involvement in the crime. While investigators allege that he acted alone,the victim’s family has raised suspicions about the involvement of others. Thay have filed an application before the court,seeking further investigation into the case.
The Kolkata Police initially handled the investigation, arresting Roy on August 10. However, the Calcutta high Court later transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).Roy’s in-camera trial began on November 12 and concluded on January 9, during which 50 witnesses were examined.
