JEMBER, Indonesia – In response to a 12 percent VAT increase, the central government has introduced a 50 percent electricity subsidy for eligible customers from January 1 to February 28, 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on households with electricity connections between 450 VA and 2,200 VA. Though, confusion has arisen among residents, particularly those with postpaid electricity connections, who mistakenly expected the discount to apply to January payments.
Donald Andrinal, the Retail Sales Team Leader at PLN UP3 Jember, clarified the details during a meeting with Jember Today journalists. “For PLN, there are two types of payments: prepaid and postpaid. For prepaid, or tokens, the discount promo applies promptly for purchases in January and February, based on the respective contract power,” he explained.
Postpaid customers, however, will only see the discount reflected in their February and march payments.“For postpaid, electricity used in January and february will be subject to a 50 percent discount when paying in February and March,” Donald added.
The electricity subsidy is part of a broader effort to stimulate the national economy in 2025. “This is why there is a 50 percent discount on electricity,” Donald emphasized.
For prepaid customers, the system operates based on PEL ID and contract capacity. For instance,a 450 VA connection allows a maximum purchase of 324 kWh per month. “If usage exceeds 324 kWh, the next token purchase will automatically fail,” Donald noted, advising such customers to consider upgrading their power capacity.
To ensure the success of the discount promotion, PLN encourages customers to maximize their electricity usage during the subsidy period. those seeking further clarification can contact their nearest PLN service office, use the M-Mobile complaints platform, or call the 123 call center.
The confusion surrounding the discount was highlighted by Ida, a housewife from Tegalbesar village, Kaliwates District. After paying her January electricity bill at a local shop, she was surprised to find the cost unchanged. A shop employee later explained that postpaid discounts would only apply to February and March payments.
