Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami: A Master of Indian Classical Music Brings Centuries-Old Art to Redon
This weekend, the Pays de Redon will witness a rare cultural event as Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami, a great master of Indian classical music, graces the region with his artistry.described by Erwan Lhermenier, one of the organizers of the visit, as a “singer from Calcutta in North India,” Goswami will host an indian singing course through the association of Little Opera, where Solenn Diguet teaches lyrical singing. The course will take place at the Pierre-Étrillard hall in Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
The same evening, at 8:30 p.m., Goswami will perform a concert, followed by a second performance on Sunday, January 19, at 5:30 p.m. under the aegis of the Foyer d’animation renacois (FAR) at the Renac multipurpose room near Redon.A Family of Artists
Goswami’s journey into music is deeply rooted in his family’s artistic legacy. “We grew up in a family where there were a lot of artists,” says Debesh Goswami, a visual artist based in Paris and the brother of the great singer.“My brother Shyam started singing with my mother” before honing his craft with great masters of Indian classical music and at the University of Calcutta.
Today,Goswami is not only a performer but also a teacher of this centuries-old art,imbued with spirituality. For 25 years, he has been an internationally renowned artist, performing at major festivals worldwide.
Meeting at the Fine Arts of rennes
The connection between Goswami and Redon traces back to the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.debesh Goswami and Erwan Lhermenier became friends while studying there in the mid-1990s. “He also came to Paris in 2013 where he studied Gregorian chant,” continues Debesh.
Lhermenier’s curiosity about musical traditions led him to Calcutta in 2000, where he met tabla players at the Ti Kendalc’h cultural center in Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust. It was during this trip that he first encountered Shyam Sundar Goswami and learned about Raga, a melodic framework in Indian classical music.
“It’s a very, very old music, of oral tradition, but scholarly, very rigorous, dating back over 5,000 years,” Lhermenier explains. “The learning is very strict. It is music listened to by intellectual classes.”

While thay may appear repetitive, they are rich with intricate details. “Everything is very codified,” explains Erwan Lhermenier, one of the event organizers. “Ragas reflect the state of mind in the morning, others in the evening. They can evoke feelings, the seasons, nature…” These conventional themes are frequently enough mixed with improvisations, where initiated listeners count measures to see if the singer lands on his feet.
A Singing Course for All Levels
The Le P’tit Opéra association is hosting a North Indian singing course (raga) on Saturday, January 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pierre-Étrillard room in saint-Nicolas-de-redon. Led by Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami and translated by his brother Debesh, this course aims to introduce participants to Indian singing. “Last year we tackled overtone singing,” says Solenn Diguet, a lyrical singing teacher. “This year, the objective is to discover Indian singing. It is open to all, beginners and experienced people alike.”

The weekend will also feature two concerts. On Saturday, January 18 at 8:30 p.m., Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami will perform at the Renac multipurpose room, accompanied by his brother and son.
