Germany: Today the SPD officially nominates Olaf Scholz as “chancellor candidate” –

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is expected today to officially anoint Olaf Solz “candidate chancellor” ahead of the February 23 elections.

The party Congress, which will be held in Berlin, will also finalize the party’s electoral program.

According to a poll by state television ZDF, the SPD is firmly in third place with 16%, behind the Christian Union (CDU/CSU), which leads with 30%, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has the 21%.

The Greens follow with 15%.

In the SPD’s 63-page program under the title “More for you. Better for Germany’, including relief for taxpayers and businesses, scrapping pension cuts and raising the minimum wage, extra taxation for property owners worth more than €100m, investment to increase car charging stations, networks electricity and heating and the construction of houses.

The SPD also promotes subsidies for companies investing in “Made in Germany”.
