Greenland can become independent if its people want it, but it is unlikely to become a US state, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loke Rasmussen said on Wednesday (January 8). Previously, US President-elect Donald Trump did not rule out using force to take control of the Danish-administered island.
Rasmussen also said Denmark was open to dialogue with Trump about his legitimate security concerns in the region, after the new US president said he was prepared to use economic tariffs or military force to seize control of Greenland. .
According to a Reuters report, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egende held talks with the Danish king in Copenhagen, a day after Donald Trump’s remarks about a military invasion of Greenland made global headlines on the world’s largest island, which is located in Arctic.
“We fully recognize that Greenland has its own ambitions,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen initially said, adding: “If they materialize, Greenland will become independent, but it will hardly become a US federal state.”
He also noted while speaking to reporters that US concerns about Arctic security are legitimate following increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region. “I don’t think we are in a foreign policy crisis,” the Danish foreign minister stressed, adding: “We are open to a dialogue with the Americans about how we can potentially work together even more closely than we do to ensure that American ambitions are met.” ».
