Arie Klein Bids Farewell to a 40-Year Legacy in Hairdressing
After nearly four decades of crafting hairstyles and creating unforgettable experiences, Arie Klein, the renowned hairstylist and founder of Creativo, is hanging up his scissors. Known as one of Emmen’s most iconic hairdressers, Klein’s journey has been a blend of artistry, hospitality, and global influence.
“Good day! First a cup of coffee or should we put the scissors in right away?” Klein greets with a smile, placing two steaming cappuccinos on the bar. The cocoa-dusted foam is a fitting metaphor for his career—rich, layered, and unforgettable.
A Legacy of Style and Hospitality
Creativo, Klein’s brainchild, has been a cornerstone of Emmen’s hairdressing scene. The salon is not just a place for haircuts; it’s an experience. With a coffee bar nestled in the heart of the shop, Klein has always believed in blending style with warmth. “hairdressing and coffee are inextricably linked,” he laughs. “I like hospitality and a nice atmosphere.”
The salon’s decor reflects Klein’s flair for combining elegance with nostalgia.A marble and brown wood hairdressing table, paired with a massive mirror, creates a vibe reminiscent of a cozy café. Vintage black leather barber chairs, likely from the 1950s, add a touch of history. “The armrests still have flaps with an ashtray underneath,” Klein notes with a chuckle.
Above it all hangs a gold-colored chandelier, a piece with its own story. “That was another set piece from the German TV program Traumhochzeit by Linda de Mol,” he shares, highlighting the salon’s unique charm.
A Global Journey in Hairdressing
Klein’s career wasn’t confined to Emmen. From 2006, he began working with an international brand, showcasing his skills on a global stage.“London, Bologna, Houston, Mexico, New York, and Los Angeles—where haven’t I been?” he reflects. “I have seen quite a lot and I am still very grateful for that.”
His travels not only honed his craft but also cemented his reputation as a hairstylist who could blend tradition with innovation.
A New chapter Begins
After years of juggling five businesses, Klein has decided to step back. “It became more difficult to keep all the balls in the air,” he admits.“So I had to make some choices.” His decision is driven by a desire to spend more time with family and friends. “No,I’m not yet sixty. But no one knows how long someone is given. So I’m just taking a step back.”
While Klein is retiring, Creativo will continue under new leadership. “My baby will continue to exist,” he says with pride.
A Father’s Influence and a Career Forged Against the Odds
Klein’s passion for hairdressing was evident from a young age. Though his father ran a home furnishings store, Klein knew his heart lay elsewhere. “I wanted something with her and people,” he recalls. His father, initially skeptical, eventually supported his choice. “You can’t make a living doing that, he said. But he would certainly have been proud.”
In an era when male hairdressers were uncommon, Klein faced stereotypes with humor. “Some quickly associate it with being gay. But I’ve always been able to laugh about that.”
A Lasting Impact
As Klein prepares to close this chapter, his legacy remains etched in the hearts of his clients and the walls of Creativo. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the art of making people feel at home.
