Elon Musk expresses his views as a “citizen” and has the “right” to do so, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stressed today, as the billionaire and close associate of President-elect Donald Trump expressed his support for figures and far-right political groups in Europe.
“Private citizens in our country can say what they want,” said the head of American diplomacy, during a press conference in Paris, alongside his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barot.
“He, like every American, has the right to speak his mind,” he emphasized.
For weeks, Elon Musk has stepped up challenges on social media X, interfering in political debate in Britain and Germany, supporting far-right voices and forcing top European officials to condemn his statements.
For his part, the French Foreign Minister urged Brussels today to protect EU member states against interference in public debate in Europe.
“Either the European Commission applies the laws we have to protect our public space to the fullest extent or it doesn’t and then it should agree to allow EU member states to be able to do that,” he pointed out.
