Jakarta Weather Update: BMKG Forecasts Rain and Cyclone Impact
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a weather forecast for Jakarta and its surrounding areas, predicting light rain across several regions on thursday, January 9, 2025. Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta are expected to experience light showers, while North Jakarta and Kepulauan seribu may face heavier rain accompanied by lightning.

Tropical Cyclone 97S: A Driving Force Behind the rain
The rain in Jakarta and its vicinity is influenced by the movement of Tropical Cyclone 97S, which originated in the Indian Ocean south of East Java.Researcher Erma Yulihastin from the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) explained that the cyclone has been moving westward and is expected to reach the south of West Java soon.”The movement of the 97S cyclone seedlings triggered strong winds on the south coast of Java and squall lines in the Java Sea towards the north coast of Java,” Erma stated. She also noted the presence of a mesoscale convective complex extending from Lampung to Jakarta, which could lead to prolonged heavy rain.
flooding Risks and Precautions
Erma warned residents to remain vigilant, stating,”The potential for heavy rain lasts until morning. Beware of flooding in Jakarta.” Her caution comes after reports of rain in several areas of Jakarta and Bogor on Wednesday night.
