Slovakia: Prime Minister announced that he has secured natural gas from Russia –

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said today that he had secured natural gas from Russia to meet his country’s energy needs during a meeting with Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin last month in Moscow.

“I had to ensure at least natural gas for domestic consumers in Slovakia. And we have secured it,” says Fitso in a video message on Facebook, without elaborating further.

Fico has accused Kiev of hurting Slovakia by not renewing the Russian gas transit agreement, which expired at the end of 2024. Slovakia’s prime minister has even threatened to cut electricity supplies to Ukraine, as well as humanitarian aid to the refugees from the war country.

Slovakia continues to receive Russian gas from Hungary, which receives it through the TurkStream pipeline after the interruption of flows through Ukraine, according to the operator of the EUSTREAM gas transmission network.

Fico plans to raise the issue of cutting off the flow of Russian natural gas through Ukraine when he meets European Commission officials in Brussels on Thursday.

For its part, Kiev emphasizes that the non-renewal of the gas transit agreement deprives Moscow of revenue as long as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico of opening a “second energy front” against Ukraine at the behest of Russia.
