The health ministry of the Hamas government that runs Gaza and the local Civil Protection agency said today that Israel has arrested the director of a major hospital in the northern Palestinian enclave that has been devastated by more than a year of war.
“The (Israeli) occupation forces took dozens of medical staff members of the Kamal Antoine Hospital, including Dr. Hussam Abu Shafiya, to a detention center for questioning,” the ministry said in a statement.
“By arresting the director of the Kamal Antoine hospital, dozens of medical and technical staff, as well as the director of Civil Protection in the north, the occupation force has completely destroyed the medical, humanitarian and aid structure in northern Gaza,” he told AFP. the representative of Civil Protection Mahmoud Basal.
The Israeli army, contacted by AFP, did not immediately comment.
The World Health Organization said yesterday, Friday, that Kamal Atwan, until then the last major hospital operating in northern Gaza, was put “out of service” after an Israeli raid against Hamas fighters near its facilities.
The Israeli army said it had launched an operation against Hamas militants near the hospital, which has a critical role in a Gaza Strip where health services have been dismantled after more than 14 months of war.
In a statement he issued yesterday, he described the hospital as a “stronghold of terrorist organizations (…) used as a hideout by terrorists”, which Hamas “categorically” rejects.
