Santa Monica Hit-and-Run: Suspect Arrested in Fatal Crash
A Los Angeles man is in custody following a fatal hit-and-run incident in santa Monica that tragically took the life of a Vietnam War veteran on December 22nd. The arrest, announced Friday, brings a measure of closure to a community reeling from the loss.
The collision occurred around 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of Chelsea Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), the victim, a Santa Monica resident and Vietnam veteran, was crossing Wilshire Boulevard southbound when struck by a white Toyota Rav4 traveling eastbound.
Eyewitness accounts and crucial surveillance footage captured the impact and the suspect fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. This evidence proved instrumental in the subsequent inquiry.
The victim’s identity has not yet been publicly released by authorities, pending notification of next of kin.
Based on the investigation, SMPD identified 30-year-old Rod Sharif of Los Angeles as the prime suspect. On December 27th, a coordinated effort involving police and SWAT officers executed search and arrest warrants at Sharif’s Santa Monica Canyon residence.
“Several items of evidence were recovered from the home along with the white Toyota Rav4 that had significant front-end damage that appeared to have been caused during the accident,” police said in a release.
Sharif was subsequently arrested and booked on charges of murder (187(a) PC) and felony hit and run (20001(a) VC). His arrest record includes prior offenses for driving under the influence (23152(a) VC) and reckless driving (23103 VC).
