There are 25 survivors, including three children, after an Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed with 67 people on board near the city of Akhtau, in western Kazakhstan, the country’s Emergencies Ministry announced.

“According to the first information, there are 25 survivors, 22 of whom are in hospital,” the ministry said in a statement posted on Telegram, adding that 150 rescuers had been sent to the crash site.

Medical authorities earlier said there were 14 survivors.

“According to the first information from the Azerbaijan side, there were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board,” the ministry added in its statement.

For its part, Azerbaijan Airlines announced that it was an Embraer 190, which “made an emergency landing”.

Kazakh authorities said they began looking into various possible versions of what had happened, including a technical problem, Russian news agency Interfax reported. The Russian aviation observatory said in a statement that preliminary information suggests the pilot decided to make an emergency landing after striking a flock of birds.
