This bold announcement comes from Sridhara Somanath, President of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), signaling a notable expansion of India’s already impressive space capabilities.
“When we celebrate 100 years of independence, the Indian flag will be hoisted on the moon. Our man will go there, install it and return safely. This will happen in 2040,” Somanath declared. This ambitious timeline underscores India’s commitment to becoming a major player in global space exploration.
The ISRO chief further emphasized the long-term vision driving this initiative: “For the first time in the history of the space program, we have a vision for the next 25 years.” This 25-year roadmap includes the construction of India’s own space station within the next decade.A crucial step in this plan is the launch of a space station module in 2028, laying the groundwork for full operational deployment.
This ambitious undertaking aligns with the directives of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who previously tasked ISRO with creating India’s first manned space station by 2035 and achieving a lunar landing by 2040. Modi’s vision extends even further, encompassing the development of orbital missions to Venus and a lander mission to Mars, showcasing a truly expansive vision for India’s future in space.
The announcement has sparked excitement both domestically and internationally, highlighting India’s growing prowess in space technology and its determination to compete with established spacefaring nations. The triumphant completion of this ambitious program would undoubtedly solidify India’s position as a global leader in space exploration, inspiring future generations of scientists and engineers.
