Andy Murray is the new coach of Novak Djokovic: the Scottish champion, who retired after being eliminated in the men’s doubles tournament at the Paris Olympics, will guide the former world no.1 at least until the next Australian Open, scheduled for 12 to 26 January 2025. For Murray It’s my first job as a coach. Both are 37 years old: Murray was born on May 15, 1987, Djokovic a week later, on 22. Andy has won 3 Slams in his career, Wimbledon twice (2013 and 2016) and a US Open (2016). He also won Olympic gold in singles twice in a row (London 2012 and Rio 2016) and for a long time was part of the “big four” with Djokovic himself, Federer e Nadalwho played his last match last Tuesday in Malaga in the Davis Final 8.
Djokovic: “Welcome aboard, legend”
The announcement came from the Serbian player himself with a post on social media where he published a photo of himself together with the British champion and the caption: “He never liked retiring”. “Welcome aboard, legend,” he then added, making the news official. Murray himself then relaunched his former rival’s post.
“I am thrilled to have one of my biggest rivals on the same side of the net as my coach. I can’t wait to start the season and compete in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on Australian soil,” added Djokovic to SkyNews UK.
Murray: “I will help him achieve his goals”
“I will be joining Novak’s team, helping him prepare for the Australian Open. I’m really excited and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net for once, helping him achieve his goals,” replied the Scotsman who a few months ago announced his retirement as a player by playing his last match at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Novak, year ended at no.7
Djokovic won the Olympic gold in Paris 2024 last August (the only major trophy missing from his incredible list), but then he went out in the third round in New York at the hands of the Australian Popyrin and lost the Masters final Shanghai 1000 with Jannik Sinner. Then he gave up on the ATP Finals in Turin for which he was qualified and reigning double champion. And he ended the year at No. 7 in the rankings.
