Peaceful Christmas Eve Celebrated Across Indonesia
Indonesia experienced a peaceful and orderly Christmas Eve, with government officials actively monitoring celebrations nationwide to ensure the safety and security of worshippers. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, personally visited several churches in Bandung, West Java, on December 24th, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering a harmonious habitat for all citizens.
“Until tonight, Christmas celebrations and worship have been proceeding in an orderly manner throughout Indonesia,” Sugiarto stated during a visit to Bandung Cathedral. His presence underscored the government’s proactive approach to maintaining peace and order during the holiday season.
Sugiarto urged regional leaders across the archipelago to remain vigilant in their monitoring efforts, ensuring that Christmas celebrations continue peacefully throughout the nation. He commended the collaborative efforts of various groups in creating a secure and festive atmosphere. “The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked all regional heads to be present tonight (Christmas Eve), not only to wish Merry Christmas but also to ensure that the entire series of celebrations and worship can proceed safely, in an orderly, and peaceful manner,” he emphasized.
Echoing this sentiment, acting West Java Governor Bey Machmudin extended Christmas greetings and reassured citizens that the provincial government prioritized the safety and well-being of Christian and Catholic communities during their worship services. He expressed his satisfaction with the smooth progression of Christmas celebrations in Bandung.
The peaceful atmosphere in Indonesia stands in contrast to some global concerns about religious freedom. The government’s proactive approach serves as a positive example for nations striving to maintain religious harmony during major holidays. The commitment to ensuring safe and orderly celebrations reflects a dedication to inclusivity and the protection of religious rights for all citizens.
