Neck Scraping After a Cold? Doctor Issues Warning
While many find relief from cold symptoms through the practise of “kerokan“ (scraping), a common remedy in some Asian cultures, a Jakarta physician is cautioning against scraping certain areas of the body, particularly the neck. The comforting warmth and temporary pain relief ofen associated with scraping might not outweigh the risks in sensitive areas.
Dr. Ray rattu, SpPD, from Mayapada Hospital in south Jakarta, explains that kerokan’s benefits stem from its application to areas with thick muscle tissue. “Scraping provides a massage to muscle tissue, releasing mediators that can relieve pain,” he stated in a recent interview. Though, this benefit is not worldwide.
The neck, with its thinner muscle tissue and proximity to vital organs, presents a different scenario. Dr. Rattu emphasizes the importance of avoiding this area. “In areas where the muscles are thin, such as in the neck near the spine, we try to avoid them,” he explained. “Excessive pressure in an area that doesn’t have enough cushioning can affect internal organs.”
“Excessive pressure in an area that does not have enough cushioning will actually have an effect on the internal organs,” said Dr. Ray.
This warning highlights the importance of understanding the limitations of traditional remedies. While kerokan might offer temporary relief for some, its application requires careful consideration of the body’s anatomy. The potential for unintended consequences, especially in delicate areas like the neck, underscores the need for caution and professional medical advice when dealing with cold symptoms.
For those seeking relief from cold symptoms, consulting a healthcare professional is always recommended. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options tailored to individual needs and health conditions.
