The paper’s impact was significant, accumulating nearly 3,400 citations in the Web of Science database, making it the most cited retracted COVID-19 related paper and second most cited retracted paper overall.
However, concerns about the study’s methodology and ethical considerations emerged early on.Dr. Elizabeth Vick,a U.S.-based image forensics expert and scientific integrity consultant, voiced concerns about the ethics approval process and potential biases in participant selection. “Six people treated with HCQ were excluded during the study, of which one died and three were transferred to the intensive care unit,” she noted, highlighting potential flaws in the data.
