When the European edition of Politico, with an article on 18/12/2024, refers to the third world war, it expresses the majority of the views of the European elite. According to the columnist, almost three years after the start of the conflicts in Ukraine, no one can “sell” the war as a “regional conflict” between Russia and Ukraine anymore.
What began in February 2022 as the largest European land war since World War II is now vying for the title of the largest global conflict since the Cold War, with dozens of countries directly or indirectly involved.
At the beginning of the conflict for both sides, foreign troops on the ground seemed prohibitive. Along the way, the French President was the first to mention the possibility of the presence of Western military units on the territory of Ukraine.
The red lines of both sides have been tested. Ukraine invaded Russia’s Kursk region and used Western weapons to strike Russian targets, such as the Black Sea Fleet.
North Korean troops are reportedly taking part in the clashes, while the US, Britain have given the green light for Ukraine to use long-range weapons such as ATACMS, which will be used against targets on Russian soil.
Towards the end of 2024, the appetite for supporting a Ukrainian victory – as a return to Ukraine’s 1991 borders – has waned in both Washington and Brussels.
Even before President Trump’s victory, the idea of a “frozen conflict” with the concession of territory from Ukraine seems to have been the main scenario, despite the public statements of Western officials.
The West’s geopolitical stance on Ukraine is strongly reminiscent of the Pygmalion myth. Pygmalion, according to Ovid, as a sculptor carved in ivory his vision of the perfect and ideal woman.
All the wishes and feelings of the artist were captured in the statue and his skillful hands carved the ivory masterfully. Pygmalion achieved the ultimate depiction and when the construction was complete he fell in love with the lifeless woman he had created.
The fable is said in the 19th century to have inspired Carlo Collodi (1883) to write The Adventures of Pinocchio, with Pinocchio often used as a term to describe someone prone to lies, fiction and exaggeration. During this period, the West has been fictionally caught up in the conflict with Russia, making China appear as the main recipient of the conflict.
However, that perception could change if North Korea’s involvement triggers an expansion of the war in the Indo-Pacific region, an area Beijing considers its “backyard”, involving South Korea and possibly NATO. As long as the war in Ukraine continues, there is always the risk that other countries will enter the conflict, turning the regional conflict into a global war.
The choice to escalate and globalize the conflict in Ukraine can be prevented at this stage only by the intervention of the new US President, as the Western elites have fallen in love with the statue they created.
No one wants war but everyone is preparing, with the European elite calling for a reduction in social spending in order to finance European war preparations and European progressive parties with a tradition of peace movements acquiescing.
But the economic crisis in Europe is a fact of declining industrial production and economic stagnation, with the victims of the crisis and the cost of the war in Ukraine turning in the majority to the extreme right. The social classes in Europe form different fictions and this can be fatal for democracy.
