protein Powders with a Kick: Myprotein and Southern Comfort Team Up
Table of Contents
The fitness world just got a boozy twist. Myprotein, a popular online sports nutrition brand, has partnered with Southern Comfort to create a line of protein powders inspired by classic whiskey cocktails. These aren’t your average protein shakes; they’re designed to taste like whiskey sours and old fashioneds, minus the alcohol.
But hold on, the idea of adding alcohol to protein shakes isn’t entirely new.Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fitness icon, famously incorporates tequila or schnapps into his own protein concoctions. In an interview with Men’s Health, he revealed his recipe, stating, ”I sometimes put in the schnapps, I sometimes put in the tequila, it just gives it a little extra flavor.”
While Schwarzenegger believes the alcohol might enhance absorption, a 2014 study published in the National Institutes of Health suggests or else. The research indicates that alcohol consumption can hinder muscle growth and recovery. This raises questions about the optimal approach to post-workout supplementation.
Myprotein’s new line, however, focuses on the flavor profile. Each serving boasts 300 mg of caffeine, 3.2 g of Beta Alanine, and 6 g of L-Citrulline Malate. The suggested retail price is $44.99 per package.Neil Mistry, CEO of THG Nutrition (Myprotein’s parent company), explained the collaboration in a press release: “Our existing Origin pre-workout is hugely popular amongst our core consumers, so it is indeed great to be able to elevate the range further with this flavor variation collab with Southern Comfort. It is indeed a perfect overlap as both brands bring an approachable confidence to their respective industries.”
The launch of these unique protein powders highlights the growing trend of innovative flavor combinations in the health and fitness industry. While the addition of alcohol to protein shakes remains a point of debate, the appeal of these cocktail-inspired flavors is undeniable, offering a possibly enticing alternative for fitness enthusiasts seeking a flavorful boost to their workout routine.

Protein Drinks and Alcohol: A Risky Mix?
The fitness and beverage industries are constantly innovating, sometimes with surprising combinations. One recent trend has been the emergence of alcoholic protein drinks, blending the worlds of health and indulgence. But is this a winning formula,or a recipe for trouble?
According to Dr. Arielle Kemps, “Consuming alcohol can negatively affect your body’s ability to absorb and utilize protein.” She explains that,“Alcohol can decrease the secretion of pancreatic enzymes that break proteins down into amino acids, thereby resulting in the inability to effectively absorb protein.” This impairment isn’t limited to the digestive process; Dr. kemps further notes, “Additionally, alcohol can reduce absorption by damaging the cells that line your stomach and small intestine. These cells are responsible for the absorption of protein.”
Despite these potential drawbacks, several brands have ventured into the market. In 2022, Protochol Beverage launched a line of spiked canned protein drinks boasting 11 grams of protein and an 8% alcohol by volume (ABV). the drinks come in three flavors: Pineapple Pump, Swoleberry, and Orange County. This isn’t an isolated incident; the same year, Pulp Culture introduced its own alcoholic protein drink, BUILD by Pulp Culture+, although it’s no longer available.
The popularity of these products raises questions about the efficacy of combining protein and alcohol. While convenient, the potential interference with protein absorption might negate some of the intended health benefits, notably for those focused on post-workout recovery.
Consumers should carefully consider the potential trade-offs before incorporating these products into their diets. While the convenience factor is undeniable, the impact on protein absorption and overall health remains a notable consideration.
