Dublin Elects new Lord Mayor: Emma Blain Takes the Reins
Dublin has a new Lord Mayor! Emma Blain, a Fine Gael councillor representing the Pembroke local electoral area, has been elected too the prestigious position, becoming the 357th to hold the office.
Blain succeeds James Geoghegan, who recently won a seat in the Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann) as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin bay South in the recent general election. Her election marks a significant moment for Dublin’s civic leadership.
Blain brings a wealth of experience to the role. Elected to public office in 2016, she previously served on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown county Council before joining Dublin City Council six months ago. Her background is diverse and extraordinary.
According to a statement released by Dublin City Council,Blain will prioritize several key areas during her term. These include “the participation and promotion of sport within communities, notably for women and girls, as well as care for the elderly and dementia awareness.”
Beyond her local political work, Blain has also served as an Irish delegate to the European Committee of the Regions as 2020, demonstrating her commitment to broader European issues. Her roots are firmly planted in Dublin; she grew up in Rathmines, where her father was the Principal of the Church of Ireland College of Education.
Interestingly, Blain’s professional background includes a stint as a journalist with the Sunday Independent. She currently serves as the editor of the Church of Ireland gazette, bringing a unique perspective to her new role.
Blain’s focus on women’s sports and elderly care resonates with similar initiatives across the United States,highlighting the global importance of these issues in local governance. Her tenure as Lord Mayor promises to be one of significant progress for Dublin.
