Amazon Launches Tactile QR Codes for Enhanced Accessibility
Amazon is making significant strides in accessibility with the introduction of tactile QR codes on the packaging of select devices. this innovative approach directly addresses the needs of blind and low-vision customers, providing a more inclusive and user-amiable experience.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between Amazon’s device packaging, accessibility, and customer support teams, stemmed from direct feedback gathered from blind and low-vision customers and employees. “Amazon’s device packaging, accessibility, and customer support teams collaborated to develop these tactile QR codes after identifying a need while working directly with blind and low-vision customers and employees,” a company spokesperson explained. Extensive user studies informed the design and implementation of these new codes.
Currently, these tactile-marked QR codes—easily identifiable by raised UV dots—are featured on the Swift Start Guides of several popular Amazon devices.This includes the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series, Fire TV Soundbar Plus Series, Fire TV Soundbar, Echo Show 15, Echo Show 21, Echo Spot, kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle Scribe. Amazon plans to expand this accessibility feature to more Fire TV, Fire Tablets, Kindle, and echo products in the near future.
To utilize the new codes, customers simply locate the raised dots on the back of their device’s Quick Start Guide and scan the code with their smartphone camera. This action redirects them to an enhanced digital Quick Start Guide on Amazon.com, providing a more accessible setup experience.
