Relatives of Palestinians killed in an Israeli strike in Khan Younis gathered around their white-shrouded bodies today before they were taken to graves.
Health officials in the Gaza Strip announced on Sunday that at least 20 people, including children, were killed in a strike launched by the Israeli army on a school where displaced families had taken refuge in Khan Yunis, in the southern Palestinian enclave.
Today the Israeli military said it had targeted Hamas militants operating from a compound that formerly housed a UN-run school. He added that the compound also served as a training center for preparing and planning attacks against Israeli forces.
Women wept as men removed the bodies of their relatives on stretchers for burial.
“People were safe, staying in their homes after the evening prayer. They were sitting, sleeping,” said Manal Tafes, whose brother and nieces are among the dead.
“Our children are lost, our children are lost. Our young people are lost (…) when will this mess end?”, he asked, speaking outside the morgue.

Israel’s military accuses Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals and mosques, for military purposes. The Palestinian organization denies this and considers this claim a pretext by Israel “to justify the indiscriminate killing of civilians”.
Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip continued today. Palestinian officials said at least 10 people were killed in strikes in various areas of the enclave.
Doctors said four people were killed in an airstrike in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, where the Israeli army has been conducting intensive operations since October. Three people were also killed by Israeli artillery shelling near the Nuseirat refugee camp cemetery in the central Gaza Strip and three others in Rafah, in the southern part of the enclave.
An initiative by Egypt, Qatar and the US to reach a truce, which would include an exchange of prisoners and hostages, has gained new momentum in recent weeks, but has so far failed to bear fruit.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that he had spoken with US President-elect Donald Trump, who returns to the White House on January 20, about efforts to free hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
“We discussed the need to complete Israel’s victory and spoke at length about the efforts we are making to free our hostages,” Netanyahu said in a statement yesterday.
