Indonesian VP Takes Reins as President Attends Egypt Conference
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is currently on a working visit to Cairo, Egypt, to attend a high-level conference. during his absence, he has appointed Vice President Gibran Rakabuming to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the presidency.
This delegation of power is officially outlined in Presidential Decree Number 34 of 2024, signed on December 16, 2024. The decree states that President Subianto will be in Egypt from December 17th to 19th for the conference.
“So,in order to maintain the smooth running of the government,it is deemed necessary to assign the Vice President to carry out the President’s daily duties during the visit,” reads the presidential decree.
The decree details that Vice President rakabuming is responsible for coordinating government affairs and must seek President Subianto’s approval for any significant policy decisions requiring immediate action. Upon the President’s return, the Vice President is required to provide a full report on his actions.
“if within the term of the assignment,it is indeed necessary to promptly establish a new policy,then the Vice President as acting President’s duties must first consult and ask for the President’s approval,” the decree states. “After the President returns to his homeland, the assignment ends and the Vice President immediately reports the implementation of thes duties to the President.”
The President’s trip coincides with a significant international conference. Coordinating Minister for economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto highlighted key discussion points, emphasizing the importance of developing nations working together on global issues.
“Firstly, D-8 [Developing-8] countries will equalize steps in dealing with the global geopolitical situation today, of course including what is happening in the Middle East in Gaza; we are enthusiastic from developing countries to support Palestine,” explained Airlangga Hartarto at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base on Tuesday, december 17th.
Another key focus of the conference is empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Indonesia plans to share its expertise in digitalizing SMEs with other participating nations.
“And second is how to empower MSMEs and how MSMEs in D-8 countries can work together. This cooperation is what is encouraged in D-8, including digitalization; this is what we will share with other D-8 countries,” added Airlangga.
