Ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said today he did not leave Syria in a premeditated way on the day the capital Damascus was seized by rebels, saying Moscow had demanded his removal, in his first statements since fleeing Damascus and the fall of the regime
“My departure from Syria was not planned nor did it happen in the last hours of the fighting, contrary to some claims,” Assad said in a statement posted on the presidency’s Telegram channel. “Moscow demanded (…) my immediate removal to Russia on the evening of Sunday, December 8,” Assad said, stressing that Syria is now “in the hands of terrorists.”
At the same time, Assad reported that he escaped to Russia from the Khmeimim base in Syria.
