The Round Robin phase ends in Turin with the last races of the Newcombe group. The situation, on the eve, is practically identical to that which concerned the Nastase group before Thursday’s matches. Zverev closes out against Alcaraz and must win to secure first place despite having already won the first two matches. In case of defeat he would go first if he wins at least one set and Ruud wins. He would move up to second if he loses 2-0 and Rublev beats Ruud or Ruud wins 2-1. In the event of a 2-0 defeat and Ruud’s 2-0 victory, he should hope not to finish third in game difference with Alcaraz and Ruud.
Alcaraz must beat Zverev to be certain of the semi-final
Alcaraz has, in practice, only one result available to be sure of moving forward: win with Zverev. And he would even do so first if Ruud wins 2-1 or Rublev beats Ruud. In case he wins 2-0 and Ruud prevails 2-0, the calculation of the games would be needed to see who, with the same direct discounts, would be excluded between Alcaraz, Zverev and Ruud. He could continue even in case of defeat but only if Rublev won 2-0. In the event of a 2-1 knockout he would be second, if he lost 2-0 he would have to hope for the better game of his two opponents, Rublev and Ruud.
ATP Finals, Sinner now risks meeting Alcaraz in the semifinals
Ruud has a high chance of finishing second
Ruud has only one chance to finish first: beat Rublev 2-0, hope that Alcaraz beats Zverev 2-0 and prevail in the game count over Zverev and Alcaraz. More likely to pass as second. If Zverev wins he must win at least one set with Rublev. If he loses 2-0, however, he must hope to have a better game difference than Alcaraz and Rublev. He advances as second in the event of a victory and a 2-1 success for Alcaraz.
Rublev needs a miracle to get through
Rublev has only one hope of qualifying: beating Ruud 2-0 and hoping that Zverev does the same against Alcaraz. At that point he could hope to have a favorable game count. The situation will certainly be clearer after the match between Zverev and Alcaraz, scheduled for 2pm. Ruud and Rublev, who play at 8.30pm, will be able to make their calculations accordingly. It is clear that if Zverev has not beaten Alcaraz 2-0, Rublev will enter the field already certain of having been eliminated. At that point the chances will increase that Ruud will face Sinner in the semi-final.
At 6pm Bolelli and Vavassori will compete for a place in the semi-finals
The eyes of Italian fans, however, beyond the last singles matches of the group stage, will be focused on the play-off between Bolelli and Vavassori and the pair no. 1 in the world Arevalo-Pavic. Whoever wins goes to the semi-final to face the surprising Heliovaara and Patten, n. 7, which the Mike Bryan group surprisingly won, the loser goes home. Appointment at 6pm.
