WSJ: Trump Considers Preemptive Strikes on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities –

US President-elect Donald Trump accepts suggestions for drastic measures against Iran, shortly before giving permission to the White House.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Trump is considering his available options to stop Iran from being able to build a nuclear weapon, including the possibility of pre-emptive airstrikes.

It is recalled that this scenario was rejected by the administration of Joe Biden when it was presented by Israel in the context of retaliation against Iran.

But Trump’s advisers think that economic measures are not enough to stop Tehran’s actions and recommend targeted airstrikes on nuclear facilities.

Iran’s weakened regional position and recent revelations that Tehran is accelerating moves on its nuclear program have sparked internal debates, officials said, but stressed that all remain at an early stage.

What seems to be holding Donald Trump back is that he doesn’t want to take actions that would trigger a new war in the Middle East, especially one that would involve the US military. Strikes at Tehran’s nuclear facilities could put Iran on a collision course with the US.

Iran has enough enriched uranium to make four nuclear bombs, making it the only country without nuclear weapons but producing 60% fissile material very close to what is required for a nuclear weapon. It will only take a few days to turn this stockpile into nuclear weapons fuel. US officials have previously said it could take several months for Iran to build a nuclear weapon.

“Strike the nukes first”

In stark contrast to the statements of Biden, who said he advised Israel before its attack on Iran to “consider other alternatives and refrain from attacks on Iranian oil facilities”, Trump said that Israel “must strike first all of Iran’s nuclear facilities in response to recent missile attacks.”

Speaking at a campaign event in North Carolina, the tycoon had commented on a question put to President Biden about the possibility of Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear program: “They asked him, ‘What do you think about Iran, would you strike Iran?’ And he replied, ‘As long as they don’t hit the nukes’… the answer should have been, hit the nukes first and worry about the rest later… I mean, it’s the biggest danger we have, nuclear weapons.”
