Francois Bayrou is the new prime minister of France.
The president of the centrist Democratic Movement (MoDem) party, who had already spoken by phone with Macron on the evening of Thursday 12/12, was one of the names circulating in recent days for the position of successor to Michel Barnier, whose government collapsed after a motion of impeachment.
However, there was much confusion over the choice of France’s new prime minister, with a report in Le Monde reporting that Macron informed Bayrou that he would not be prime minister and that their almost two-hour meeting was tense.
Who is Francois Bayrou?
He was born on May 25, 1951 in the Border of the Pyrenees Atlantiques, France. He is an associate professor of classical studies and an adviser to political figures since 1979. He was a Member of Parliament from 1986 to 2012 and an MEP from 1999 to 2002, while he has been the mayor of Po since 2014.
From 1993 to 1997, during three right-wing governments, he served as Minister of Education. At the same time, he was president of various centrist parties: the Center for Social Democrats (CDS) from 1994 to 1995 and the Democratic Force (FD) from 1995 to 1998, the Union for the French Republic (UDF) from 1998 to 2007 and the Democratic Movement (Movement démocrate) since 2007 until today.
He has run for office in three presidential elections. A UDF candidate, he came fourth in the first round of the 2002 election, with 6.8% of the vote. In 2007 he was thought to be in a position to qualify for the second round, but came third with 18.6% of the vote. He then founded the MoDem party, which he anchored in the centre, while the UDF traditionally ranks on the centre-right. In the 2012 presidential election, he received 9.1% of the vote, finishing in fifth place.
After dropping out of the 2017 presidential election, he supported Emmanuel Macron, who subsequently appointed him minister of state and minister of justice.
