Waseda University Runner Eyes Hakone Ekiden Victory, Sets Sights on 2028 Olympics
Shinsaku Kudo, a sophomore at Waseda University, is making headlines as he prepares for the grueling 101st tokyo-Hakone Round-trip University Ekiden, scheduled for January 2nd and 3rd. This prestigious Japanese collegiate race,a two-day,10-leg relay covering 135 miles,is known for its challenging mountain stages and intense competition. Kudo’s role is crucial; he’ll once again tackle the demanding fifth leg, a section that previously proved a stumbling block for Waseda.
Last year, as a freshman, Kudo’s performance in the fifth leg was a turning point for Waseda, significantly improving their overall standing. This year, he’s even more prepared. “I can’t seem to get my contacts in,” he admitted at a recent press conference. “I couldn’t get them to fit even though I tried, and I’ve given up.I’ve been running in glasses for a long time, so I want to keep them until the end of my competitive career.” His dedication extends beyond just his eyewear; he’s also significantly improved his flat-ground running, placing second in the Izumo Ekiden and third in the All Japan Championships.
Kudo’s academic pursuits also contribute to his success. A physiology student, he proudly stated, “I definitely believe that conditioning is my key to conditioning. I have changed the way I practice in some ways based on the knowledge I have learned.” His improved performance and increased visibility have even led to some unexpected fan encounters. “Two people I passed by said to me in a whisper, ‘Oh, you’re a great detective’,” he shared, highlighting his growing recognition.
But Kudo’s ambitions extend beyond collegiate competition. He’s setting his sights on the 2028 los Angeles Olympics, aiming for a marathon spot. “I want to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics,” he declared. “I’m in a situation where I won’t be able to make it in time unless I run next year or the year after, so I’m thinking about running a marathon while still in school.” His determination to achieve a top-three finish in the Hakone Ekiden fuels his Olympic aspirations, showcasing the dedication and drive of this rising star in Japanese athletics.
