Blood Donations Power Pediatric Cancer Research: A Holiday Initiative

This holiday season, a collaborative effort is transforming the fight against childhood cancer. A new initiative is leveraging the power of blood donations to directly fund crucial research, offering a unique opportunity for donors to make a double impact.
The initiative, dubbed “December Solidarity,” unites the French Blood Establishment Occitanie (EFS Occitanie) and the Enfants Cancers Santé Occitanie association. From December 16th to 29th, for every blood donation made in the Occitanie region, EFS Occitanie will donate €1 to Enfants Cancers Santé. This means every pint donated will contribute twice – onc through the life-saving power of blood itself, and again through direct funding for research.
Laurent Bardiaux, Director of EFS Occitanie, explains the initiative’s significance: “Thus, for each donor who comes from December 16 to 29 in one of the 13 donation centers or the 100 collection points in our region, we will donate €1 to the association.”
The funds raised will be channeled directly to research institutes dedicated to developing innovative treatment protocols for pediatric cancers. This direct investment in research holds immense promise for improving outcomes for children battling this devastating disease.
Professor Anne Laprie, a Radiotherapist Oncologist specializing in pediatric oncology, highlights the impact of such funding: “Thanks to the donations it collects, the Enfants Cancers Santé association has supported the work of my team, carried out in collaboration with all radiotherapist oncologists in France. This financial contribution made it possible to prepare a project which will use artificial intelligence to increase the understanding of the mechanisms of relapse of this disease. This is therefore a great help to our research theme on childhood brain tumors.”
Bardiaux further emphasizes the urgency of the initiative, stating: “At the end of the year, blood reserves are often fragile. Between vacations, celebrations and winter illnesses, collection objectives are more difficult to achieve. by partnering with Enfants Cancers Santé, we wish to mobilize citizens of the Occitanie region and convey a message of hope for children with cancer.”
