Toyota is poised to disrupt the US SUV market with the upcoming launch of its highly anticipated Hilux Rangga, a customizable vehicle built in collaboration with Indonesian car body manufacturer, New Armada. The vehicle, initially showcased at the 2024 GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show), is slated for a 2025 US release.
“We plan to start selling the SUV (the All New Hilux Rangga concept SUV on display at GIIAS 2024),” confirmed Anton jimmi Suwandy,Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM),during a recent test drive event. “So currently we are still discussing with New Armada, because the price is decided by New Armada.”
Suwandy offered a glimpse into the pricing strategy, stating, “New Armada will set prices this month, actually I already know roughly what the price range is, so for example the automatic diesel SUV will cost around Rp.490 million to Rp. 500 million.I think the automatic petrol one might be a bit cheaper. Under IDR 400 million for a diesel manual, that’s about between.” (Note: Conversion to USD will be provided upon official US pricing release.)
This collaboration marks a significant step for Toyota, echoing its successful partnerships with local body builders during the Toyota Kijang era. Suwandy explained, “So that’s what I heard that we are discussing with New Armada, what is the price of petrol, what are the optional options? So it’s similar to the Kijang of the past, there was the Kijang Commander, the Kijang rover, so each car body can make its own variant.”
The flexibility extends beyond New Armada. Suwandy added, “Incidentally, our first collaboration is with New Armada, but I have also seen that many other car body manufacturers are interested, there are 5 car body companies that are making their own versions which may be adjusted to the needs of each region with prices.” This multi-solution approach allows for customization to meet diverse business and consumer needs across the US.
Toyota is actively engaging with its US dealerships to develop extensive strategies supporting the Hilux Rangga’s launch. The company’s official website highlights the collaboration with over 80 local body builders globally, emphasizing its commitment to fostering the growth of the local automotive industry and providing a wide range of customizable options for the US market.
