Nevada residents face a fast-approaching deadline too secure affordable health insurance through teh Affordable Care Act (ACA). The open enrollment period for Nevada Health Link, the state’s official health insurance marketplace, ends on December 31st, 2024. Those enrolling by this date will see coverage begin january 1st,2025. A grace period extends enrollment until January 15th, but coverage will then start February 1st.
According to Katie Charleson, communications director for nevada Health Link, “Time to get enrolled is now,” she urged. “Open enrollment is happening now through January 15. Check us out. It’s a lot more affordable than it has been in the past. Extended subsidies are still happening.”
The Inflation Reduction Act continues to offer significant savings, with enhanced premium tax credits making health insurance more accessible than ever before. Currently, nearly 97,000 Nevadans are enrolled in plans through Nevada Health Link, enjoying significant cost reductions.
Charleson highlighted that subsidized plans are particularly beneficial for individuals who don’t qualify for Medicare or Medicaid, lack employer-sponsored coverage,or are self-employed. Importantly, she emphasized that those under DACA, asylum seekers, and other non-citizens with work authorization may also be eligible. Nevada Health Link protects personal information and is not considered a public charge.
dr. Jeffrey Reynoso,Region 9 director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provided further context. He stated that approximately 86% of currently covered Nevadans pay an average of just $3.50 per day for their coverage. “When you really think about it, I know for me, that is less than my cup of coffee this morning,” Reynoso noted. ”Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration and the Inflation Reduction Act, the financial help still exists for all of you in 2025 but the clock is ticking to get covered and take advantage.”
Though, the future of thes savings remains uncertain. A report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities warns that without Congressional action to extend the subsidies, nine out of ten Nevadans currently covered through Nevada Health Link could face premium increases of $700 per year. This underscores the urgency of enrolling before the deadline.
