The decision to stop grain deliveries to Syria, due to the uncertainty that prevails in the country, but also the delays in payments observed due to the situation, was made by Moscow, according to a report by the Reuters agency that cites anonymous Russian and Syrian officials.
According to what the relevant report states, the interruption of deliveries has immediate effect, since two ships carrying Russian wheat to Syria never reached their destination. It is noted that the deliveries of grain to Syria have been taking place recently in order to circumvent the sanctions imposed by the West on both Damascus and Moscow.
A Russian source close to the government told Reuters that supplies to Syria have been suspended because exporters are concerned by uncertainty over who will manage wheat imports from the Syrian side after the change of power in Damascus.
“I think nobody would dare to supply wheat to Syria under the current circumstances,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, told Reuters.
The Minister of Agriculture of Ukraine, Vitaly Koval, responded with his statements to the Russian decision to stop deliveries, who emphasized that his country is ready to supply Syria with grain, covering the gap that is being created.
Russia’s move comes at a time when reports say that Moscow – a key ally of the Assad regime for years – has already opened channels of communication with the new leadership in Syria, where, among other things, it is discussing the future of Russian power and the bases in Tartus and Lattakia.
