Lazio’s magical moment continues. In Monza comes the fifth consecutive victory (0-1) between championship and cup which launches Baroni’s men into second place. Zaccagni’s magic at the end of the first half was enough to defeat the Brianza team. The defeat weighs heavily on Nesta’s team, which suffers its third defeat in a row and remains at the bottom of the table alongside Venezia.
«The match report»
Turati saves Monza at the start
Illusory start for the red and white team who after just 2′ misses the target with Dany Mota. In the 10th minute it was Daniel Maldini who kicked with first intention, but the ball went over the crossbar. Lazio wakes up, raises the pace and carves out two opportunities in the space of a few minutes, first with Dia and then with Nuno Tavares: Turati’s interventions are decisive. In the 19th minute, Monza took the lead again with Kyriakopoulos who crossed to Bianco, who headed it in, missing the target. In the 28th minute there is a VAR check for a possible handball by Pedro Pereira in the Capitoline penalty area: the referee Colombo lets it continue.
Zaccagni, post and then decisive goal
At the half hour mark, Monza attempted to attack on the counterattack with Maldini, but Provedel blocked without any problems. A few minutes later Zaccagni hits a sensational post. The time was ripe for Lazio to take the lead, which came in the 36th minute: Pedro fed Zaccagni himself, who placed the ball with a right-footed shot to the far post and made it 1-0. A few minutes before the break Mota has a chance to equalise, but misses the target.
Monza not very incisive, Lazio close to doubling their lead
In the second half, Lazio picked up where they left off, making themselves dangerous first with a shot from Rovella defused by Turati and then with a couple of incursions from Nuno Tavares who, somehow, was contained by the opposing defence. After having risked capitulating, Monza reacted and began to push decisively in search of an equalizer: Maldini fed Dany Mota who shot, but Nuno Tavares deflected it for a corner. In the 72nd minute Pedro Pereira serves an excellent ball for Maldini who, from a good position, wastes everything. Baroni’s team tries to close the game by taking advantage of some counterattacks but Turati avoids the worst especially on a close-range shot by Castellanos in the 85th minute.
