European Parliament Delegation Condemns Bulgarian President’s Decision on Government Consultations
A delegation from the European Parliament (EP) has strongly criticized Bulgarian President Rumen Radev for excluding a parliamentary party from government formation consultations, calling the move a violation of the country’s constitutional spirit.
Elena Yoncheva, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the DPS (A New Beginning) party, expressed her disapproval on Facebook, stating that Radev’s decision to bar the party from the consultations was a “clear step towards the destruction of statehood and undermining the rule of law.”
“This unprecedented decision is a clear signal of the imposition of one-man power that tramples democratic norms in an EU member state,” Yoncheva wrote.
Yoncheva emphasized that the exclusion of DPS from the consultations effectively disenfranchised nearly 300,000 Bulgarian citizens, depriving them of political portrayal. She vowed to inform all relevant European institutions about the “gross violation of the principles of political pluralism.”
“The President should embody the unity of the nation. We have repeated this phrase many times,” Yoncheva insisted.
She also pointed out that the decision aligns with Article 92, Paragraph 1 of the Bulgarian Constitution, which outlines the procedures for government formation consultations.
The controversy stems from Radev’s decision to continue consultations with other political parties represented in the 51st National assembly but to exclude DPS-New Beginning. The press center confirmed that no meeting with DPS-New Beginning is scheduled for either December 11 or December 12.
Delyan Peevski, a prominent figure within the DPS party, announced that while representatives of his parliamentary group would attend the consultations at “Dondukov” 2, he would not be present personally. Peevski did not elaborate on his reasons for this decision.
The presidency released a detailed schedule for the consultations, which includes meetings with representatives of “Vazrazhdane” on December 11 at 2:30 p.m. and with “BSP – United Left” at 4:00 p.m. On december 12, at 11:00 a.m., Rumen Radev is set to meet with the parliamentary group “Democracy, Rights and Freedoms” (DPS).
The exclusion of DPS-new Beginning from the consultations has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that it undermines democratic principles and sets a dangerous precedent for future governance in Bulgaria.
As the situation unfolds, European institutions and Bulgarian citizens alike will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts the country’s political landscape and its standing within the European Union.
President Rumen Radev Engages in Key Political Meetings Amidst Parliamentary Dynamics
President Rumen Radev is set to engage in a series of high-stakes political consultations today, reflecting the ongoing tensions and alliances within Bulgaria’s political landscape. Starting at 1:00 p.m., the president will meet with representatives of the influential party “There Is Such a Nation,” followed by a session at 3:00 p.m. with the parliamentary group of PP MECH.
These meetings come on the heels of a morning dialog between the two leading political forces in parliament—GERB-SDS and PP-DB—held at “Dondukov” 2.The discussions underscore the complex maneuvering among parties as they navigate the challenges of forming a stable government.
Meanwhile, a separate growth has drawn attention to the political dynamics. DPS-New Beginning has announced its intention to meet with President Radev, though notably, Delyan peevski will not be part of the delegation. This decision comes as Peevski recently commented on the prosecutor’s office, suggesting that it had artificially boosted the ratings of Kiril Petkov.Peevski’s remarks add another layer of intrigue to the already volatile political climate.
“The prosecutor’s office inflated Kiril Petkov’s rating,” Peevski stated, sparking debate over the integrity of public opinion polls and the role of law enforcement in shaping political narratives.
As President Radev continues his consultations, the focus remains on how these interactions will influence the future of Bulgaria’s governance. The stakes are high, with each party vying for strategic advantage in the ongoing political chess game.
