Acclaimed actor Jamie Foxx recently shared a harrowing tale of survival and resilience in his Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was … The 56-year-old star, known for his Oscar-winning performance in Ray, opened up about a medical emergency that struck him in April 2023, which he had kept under wraps until now.
During the filming of the upcoming comedy Back in Action with co-star Cameron Diaz, Foxx experienced a severe headache. His friends took him to see a doctor in Atlanta, who administered a cortisone shot and sent him home. However, Foxx’s sister, Deidra Dixon, sensed that something was amiss.
Foxx criticized the initial medical care he received, quipping, “What the fuck is that? I don’t know if you can do Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star.” But he had nothing but praise for the staff at Piedmont Hospital, where his sister took him, just a stone’s throw away from the theater where he shot the special.
“She had a hunch that some angels [were] in there,” foxx said. “ya’ll saved my life just 400 yards away from here in Piedmont hospital. They put me back together again.”
By the time foxx arrived at the hospital, he had collapsed. His sister was given the grim news that her brother was experiencing a brain bleed that had led to a stroke, and if they didn’t operate immediately, he would not survive.
“If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him,” Foxx recalled his sister being told. She knelt down outside the operating room and prayed fervently.
While unconscious, Foxx described the experience as “oddly peaceful.” He saw a tunnel but no light, and wondered if he was heading in the wrong direction. “Shit, am I going to the wrong place in this motherfucker? Because I looked at the end of the tunnel, and I thought I saw the devil like, ‘Come on.’ Or is that Puffy [Sean Combs]? I’m fucking around,” he joked.
Until the special, Foxx had kept the details of his condition private, leading to speculation in the press and among his fans. He explained that he woke up in May, finding himself in a wheelchair with no recollection of why he was there. Doctors told him he might make a full recovery, but it would likely be the “worst year of his life.”
Foxx recounted his attempts to adjust to his new circumstances, joking about trying to keep his “pickle” private from his female nurse before realizing she had already been bathing him for a month and a half. He also expressed gratitude to numerous physiotherapists and a psychiatrist who helped him reaffirm his Christian faith, which he believes was key to his recovery. “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive” became his mantra.
Back in Action is set to be released on January 17, and What Had Happened Was … is now streaming on Netflix.
