Two cases of leptospirosis, a bacterial disease spread through animal urine, have been reported in Batu City, Indonesia, prompting swift action from local health officials. The Batu City Health Service is working diligently to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
“Because in Batu City there are lots of farms and agricultural land,” explained Dr. Susana Indahwati, Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Batu City Health Office, during a recent interview on Radio City Guide 911 FM. “This makes the incidence of leptospirosis quite high.”
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease,meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans.It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira and is often spread through contact with contaminated water or soil.
Dr.Susana highlighted the proactive measures taken by the health service to address the situation. “Mitigation steps have been taken,by providing education in the form of understanding what diseases can occur during the rainy season. Including Leptospirosis,” she said.
In addition to educational initiatives, the Batu City Health Office has intensified community service efforts to clean the environment since the beginning of 2024, focusing on areas particularly susceptible to leptospirosis transmission.
Dr. Reality Sari, a general practitioner at Hasna Medika Malang emergency room, emphasized the importance of understanding the diseaseS transmission routes. “several animals carry Leptospira bacteria such as mice, dogs, pigs, horses and cows. Apart from that, the risk of transmission increases in the rainy season,” she stressed.
Leptospirosis can be effectively treated with antibiotics like penicillin and doxycycline. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol can help manage initial symptoms, which may include fever, headache, and muscle aches.
Public health experts urge individuals to practice good hygiene and take preventive measures to minimize the risk of infection. This includes maintaining cleanliness,washing hands thoroughly with soap and water,wearing protective gear when wading through flooded areas,and covering wounds with waterproof bandages.
“Therefore,the public is advised to intensify Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour (PHBS) to prevent the transmission of Leptospirosis,” Dr.Susana concluded.
