IPhone SE 4 to Get Apple’s First 5G Modem, iPhone 17 Slim on the Way

Apple is gearing up to release its first in-house 5G modem next year, marking a notable step in the tech giant’s quest for greater control ‌over its‌ hardware. Though, early‍ reports⁤ suggest that this initial iteration may not ⁤quite‌ match the performance of qualcomm modems currently used‌ in iPhones.

According to Bloomberg ‍journalist Mark Gurman, Apple’s debut 5G modem will make its first appearance in the new‍ iPhone SE 4 and entry-level iPad, both slated for release in spring 2025. Following this, the modem will be integrated⁣ into the iPhone‍ 17 Slim/Air, expected to⁣ launch in ⁢September 2025.

Gurman’s‍ report indicates that this⁤ chip will achieve download speeds of up to 4 Gbps, falling short of the speeds offered by Qualcomm modems in current iPhone models.”Apple’s first 5G ⁣modem will‌ not support super-fast 5G called mmWave,” Gurman noted.

Despite this initial performance gap,⁢ Apple’s modem boasts several advantages over ‍its Qualcomm counterparts. Thes include lower power⁤ consumption, enhanced mobile network scanning⁤ capabilities, and improvements for satellite‍ connectivity. It⁤ will⁣ also support‌ dual-SIM functionality, allowing both SIM cards to be active simultaneously.

Apple has‌ reportedly been rigorously ‍testing this⁣ new modem on devices used⁣ by⁤ hundreds‌ of its employees worldwide.

While the first Apple-designed⁤ 5G modem won’t be featured in high-end devices ‍like the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple has ambitious ⁤plans for the future. The ⁢company ‍aims to entirely replace Qualcomm modems with its own by 2026 and 2027.

“Apple’s second generation 5G modem will debut on all iPhone ‍18 models in ⁣2026 and‍ iPad Pro in 2027,” Gurman ⁤predicts. “This modem ‌supports mmWave so it can ⁢support ⁤higher download speeds of up ‌to 6Gbps.”

Looking further⁣ ahead, ‌Apple is developing ‌a third-generation modem scheduled for⁤ release in 2027. This advanced⁣ modem⁢ will incorporate built-in ‌network connectivity and is‍ expected to surpass Qualcomm modems in both performance and features.

apple’s foray into ‌5G modem development began ⁣in 2018. The acquisition of Intel’s modem business‍ in 2019 provided a significant boost to this initiative.Earlier this year, Apple extended its 5G modem procurement agreement with Qualcomm untill March‍ 2027, aligning⁢ with its timeline for a complete transition to⁤ in-house modems.
