Benin Media Joins Government’s 16-Day GBV Action Plan

Benin’s media​ landscape is stepping ‌up to combat​ violence ​against women and girls. A recent training‍ session,organized by ‌Minister of Social Affairs and ‌microfinance Véronique ⁣TOGNIFODÉ,brought together ‌a ⁢diverse group ⁣of media professionals – from television and radio ​personalities to online influencers and print journalists ‌– to⁣ empower them in the‍ fight against gender-based violence.

This initiative, held ‍on December ⁢3, 2024, is part of⁤ the country’s annual ⁢16-day campaign against gender-based violence. It follows a call to action‍ from media actors during the campaign’s launch in November 2023. Minister TOGNIFODÉ recognizes the crucial role media professionals play in shaping ‌public opinion and‍ raising awareness about women’s rights.

“As a result of the progress that is the result of the priority given ⁤by the ⁤Goverment of President Patrice TALON to the protection of women’s rights and taking into​ account‍ the subject on which the campaign 16 days of ​action is aimed, it was necessary ⁢strengthen ​the contribution.⁤ of the media to the fight against violence ‍against girls and women during this session,”

She emphasized the importance of disseminating⁣ accurate information about women’s rights, particularly focusing on​ law No. 2021-11,‍ enacted on December 20,‍ 2021. The Minister⁤ urged ⁢media actors to ⁤leverage ‍their platforms to promote gender equality and ⁢highlight the devastating consequences of ⁢violence against women ‍and girls.

Euloge OKAMBAWA, secretary General of the National Media⁤ and Vision ⁢Council of Benin, ⁤expressed strong support for the initiative, pledging​ to ⁤collaborate with media outlets to amplify the ‌government’s efforts. ⁣Huguette BOKPÈ‌ GNANCADJA, President ⁢of the National⁣ Institute of Women, echoed this‌ sentiment, thanking ⁢media professionals for their ongoing contributions and encouraging them to do even more.

The 16-day campaign, launched on November 25, 2024, in Cotonou,⁤ continues nationwide with⁢ the support of Technical and Financial Partners, particularly those within the Gender and⁤ Protection Thematic Group.
